OCTOBER 2009 UPDATES

  • On Oct. 21-23, 2009, the Income-Generation Group (IGP) had a very productive 3 day-workshop which discussed on the current IGP studies and proposed business planning in Mae Sot.   It was attended by all the MS staff such as Dawa, Cynthia, Kaw-kaw, Kid and See as well as Mitos, Aunty Nancy, Nikos and Jovy.
  • The 5 day-Project Cycle Management organized by the Education and Training team was successfully conducted on October 27 to 31, 2009 in Mae Sot. It was attended by Dawa, Cynthia, Aunty Nancy, Nang Hseng, Fuji, Dina, Say Meh, Choe Khu and other members from the partner organizations.

WEAVE Seeks Venture-Partners for its New Livelihood Program

Chiang Mai September 2009  WEAVE, in collaboration with its local partners composed mainly of displaced and refugee women on the Thai-Burma borders, has developed a project that will provide safe employment, promote production and marketing of locally-produced handicrafts, improve food security and reduce dependency on refugee ration.

For Karen people who live in temporary shelters (refugee camps) on the Thai-Burma borders for the last 20 years, life can be very hard. The everyday challenges of poverty and life as a refugee are compounded by a number of other problems, including over-crowding, poor nutrition and sanitation, lack of economic opportunity, inability to work outside the refugee camps, and a highly competitive labour market. However, in the 3 Karen refugee camps in Tak and Mae Hong Son Provinces, change is taking place as a result of the support extended by Women’s Education for Advancement and Empowerment (WEAVE).
